Nokia 1616 – The ‘smarter’ phone !

I am often criticized for my switch from Nokia N73 to my new purchase Nokia 1616,one of the cheapest branded mobile phones available in the country, that too at a time when it is expected that your next upgrade from N73 would be an iPhone,Blackberry,Samsung or HTC.

We live in an era of smart phones as I find the whole country obsessively moving towards them. Is it the hunger for information while on the move or is it the plain need to keep up with latest trend of phones – is something that I need to find out . Some of my friends have spent a whole month’s salary to get the ‘smartest’ ones only to remain hooked day & night to their apps and games. So, engaged they are with their gadgets that you hardly find them speaking on the phone or off the phone – the very purpose for which they bought the phone or probably you thought they bought the phone ?

The main purpose of a cellphone, that is too communicate, has suddenly become secondary, if not lost. What’s in a phone model, over and above its ability to communicate, is what governs a customer’s choice today .The web is filled with sites which enable a person to compare mobile phones : price by price, feature by feature!

But as for me it took me 5 mins to buy this phone . I went to a mobile shop , asked the shopkeeper to show me the cheapest nokia phone available . Holding a Nokia 1616 in my hand, I asked him what are its functions and he retorts- the usual ones! And that’s it – I got myself a new phone. No quotations,no feedbacks,no exhaustive searches on internet, nothing ! And as for performance, this little one is a beauty. It has a long battery life which helps me talk uninterruptedly upto a whole week without charging . So, there is no need to find new excuses every time you have been too lazy to charge your cellphone!

I still remember the sweet old advertisement in which Kajol used to say Phone hota hai baat karne ke liye ! I guess showing such an advertisement, these days, would be no less than a felony !
